Power Play and Megaplier: Up to 10x Your Prize
For $1 more, Power Play multiplies secondary prizes 2x to 10x. Megaplier does the same 2x to 5x. Rules, exclusions and real value.

Each lottery offers a paid option that multiplies secondary tier prizes — never the jackpot. In Powerball it is Power Play ($1, making a $3 ticket); in Mega Millions it is Megaplier ($1). Knowing when it is worth the money means understanding what gets multiplied and what does not.
What is multiplied, and what is not
Power Play applies to tiers 2 through 9, never the jackpot. The 5-of-5 without the Powerball, worth $1,000,000, is also multiplied up to 10x (capped at $2,000,000 by the lottery).
Megaplier follows the same logic: 2x to 5x, jackpot excluded, capped at $5,000,000 for tier 2.
The odds of each multiplier
In Powerball, 2x and 3x appear most often, 5x rarely and 10x very rarely. The extra expected value, computed only on tiers 2 to 9, stays well below the dollar spent for most players.
In short: the multiplier raises variance and excitement, not mathematical expectation.
When the option makes sense
It makes sense if you aim at intermediate tiers: it turns a $100 prize into $200 to $1,000. If you only chase the jackpot, it adds nothing.
